As longer days and warmer weather approaches, many seek outdoor adventure. Back in 2015, the Independent Herald looked for the perfect opportunity to encourage their community to get active and discover the beauty their area has to offer, so the #20WeekHikingChallenge was born. It is now an annual event for residents and visitors alike. The 2021 #20WeekHikingChallenge kicked off last week and is expected to run through July 2021.
The theme for this year is adventure. Along the way, hikers can expect to visit picturesque overlooks, waterfalls, and historic and cultural sites at areas including Daniel Boone National Forest, Pogue Creek State Natural Area, Colditz Cove State Natural Area, Pickett State Park, Frozen Herald State Park, Alvin C. York State Historic Park, Obed Wild & Scenic River and the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area.
For the 2021 challenge, many businesses and organizations in the community donated prizes to be given throughout the five months including a t-shirt fundraiser with Oneida Middle School to kick off the challenge. Not only is this a great way for residents to get involved in the community, but it helps to boost tourism in the area with several hundred anticipated to participate.
