Tennessee is nicknamed the Volunteer State. It’s a name that has inspired its citizens to help their fellow Tennesseans. Examples have been seen after the 2010 Nashville flood, the 2016 Great Smoky Mountains wildfires and with First Lady Maria Lee’s Tennessee Serves initiative.
Sometimes the Volunteer spirit inspires surrounding states like it did to Karen Berni of South Carolina. She wrote to TDTD after the launch of Kid Reviewed, a campaign that partnered with attractions across the state to measure children’s joy through wearable technology called Laugh Trackers.
Here’s what she had to say:
“I am a 68-year-old woman ...[and] live in a small town - Abbeville South Carolina. We have some, but not a lot of opportunity for kid's activities. Also, I have to tell you, I hate commercials! I mute them on my phone and computer and watch a lot of PBS. I did, however, watch your ad with the laugh meter and was very impressed! Dolly Parton talking about a child's laugh is so very true! I'm writing to tell you and your team that your ad inspired me to go to our county library to see how I can give to the kids that may not be able to go to Tennessee. I start volunteering with the summer reading program on Monday! Because of your ad - coming from the Volunteer State - I am going to make a difference in a child's life. Thanks for the inspiration! Truly, you and your team have put together great advertising that doesn't look like advertising. Kudos to you!!
